Kuffel Creek Press is a publishing company formed in 1998
to feature the works and craftsmanship of Kevin Hauser.
America- The Land of Opportunity
If
any of you out there have a dream of starting your own business, I want to
encourage you to go for it. Eight years ago, I went to the County
office and filed a fictitious name application, and opened a commercial
bank account with $200 in it. This was the official launch of Kuffel
Creek, and I felt silly calling it a company, as the only thing I had was
a file on the computer and an empty website. Our capital consisted
of a used file cabinet, a computer (that I had no idea how to operate), and a couple of Rubbermaid drawers.
Since
then, we've expanded our products, put most of the money back into the
business, and determined that product excellence and customer service
would be a hallmark of our company. We have been rewarded with
increasing sales and customer loyalty. The business has supported
itself, and I have not had to put any more "seed" money into it since that $200
(not always the case when starting a business!).
Not
that there have not been some scary moments. When we first decided
to advertise nationally, the first ad cost as much as our house payment.
One or two months without any orders would have wiped out our meager bank
account. But people responded with curiosity, then interest, and
finally orders.
I
thank God that we live in a country where this is possible, and I want to
encourage you that if we can do it, you can do it. But the
motivation must come from you. It would have been easy to get
discouraged, to give up, or not even take that first step. But the
rewards are great.
Sometimes
before I make a bank deposit, I look at the addresses on the checks people
sent from all over the country, even foreign countries. Every one of
them is someone who is willing to give their hard-earned money for our
plans. Some will send photos of their completed trailer and tell us
how much they liked our plans and how happy they are with their trailer,
and the new friends they've met at campouts and gatherings.
It
is rare that you have the chance to have the best in the world of
anything, but we strive the publish the best plans and books. And I know there
are those of you out there that have a unique ability, to find some niche
market, and produce the best of something, even the best in the
world. That's what's made America the best country in the world,
it's citizens working and having the freedom to be the best.
Kuffel Creek is a POD (Print on Demand) publisher. Books are
usually printed when an order is received. This gives us tremendous
flexibility, as books are stored on disk, so they will never go out of
print. New titles can easily be added, featuring topics and narrow
subjects that would never see the light of day with a traditional
publisher because of limited demand. The publications are easily
updated, the material is always fresh and relevant.
